New Year’s Resolutions

Ahh, there’s nothing like a new year! I love fresh starts and there is nothing like a new decade, year, and week all in one.

Welcome, 2020!

As a kid, if I had a bad morning before school, Mother would blast some fun music in the car. Just before pulling through the drop off line, she would look over her shoulder at my sister and I, and she would announce that we were starting over! We would shake off the bad morning and prepare to have a good day.

And guess what? It worked!

So, whether 2019, or the last decade for that matter brought you all of your hopes and dreams, or you felt like you were just managing to survive, today is a fresh start!

While I believe a fresh start can happen anytime you want to make it happen, today is a great opportunity.

This leads me to my 2020 resolutions, or as I prefer to call them: goals!

While I lean more towards privately setting these goals and then sharing once I have achieved them, I have decided as part of my 2020 goals to go ahead and share them.

You may have heard of the concept of a word of the year? You choose a word that will be your mantra for the entire year and you incorporate it into many aspects of your life.

My 2020 word of the year:

SHARE

That is why I am choosing to go ahead and share my goals. Do I feel a bit vulnerable? Yes. But, I am going against everything my enneagram 8 heart says and deciding to share. It isn’t easy for us 8s to share the real, deep stuff, but I am pushing myself to share beyond the surface level, and this is a start.

Now for the GOALS:

I evaluated different areas of my life and asked myself how I could improve each area. Some areas, I felt content with. Others, not so much.

I decided to work on four areas:

  • work + learning
  • health + wellness
  • personal
  • spiritual growth

Some other areas you could evaluate are:

  • financial
  • family + relationships
  • fun + recreation
  • physical environment

*note, these category ideas came from the Makse Goal Setting planner. I am not using this planner this year, but several of my friends are.

I decided which categories to work on by asking myself a few questions:

  • Am I content in this area of life?
  • Can I improve in this area of life?
  • Where would I like to be by 2021, and is this area different in my vision of my 2021 self?

Once I decided on which categories to set goals towards, I worked on the goals:

For each category: I divided it into sub-categories and listed action steps I could take towards bettering this area of my life. Then, my goals seemed clear.

Work + Learning

Blog:

  • listen to podcasts for content ideas and site setup
  • post 3x weekly
  • include seasonal content

Grad School:

For a while, I have planned to go beyond getting my bachelor’s degree, but this year I started exploring different avenues. I am not quite ready to share, because I still have lots of thinking, praying, and research to do, but this area needs some work.

  • listen to podcasts to gain understanding on potential areas of study
  • begin studying for pre-grad school tests

Memoir:

For the last two years I have been working on a memoir detailing my experiences fighting cancer 3x. I finished writing in December and am in the personal editing process.

  • send manuscripts to editiors/ publishers

Health + Wellness

Routines:

I thrive on routines. With a new semester, I need to reevaluate my current routines and modify + add to make them better fit this season of life.

  • solid morning routine
  • solid evening routine

Physical Health:

My body has been through so much and I want to focus on taking care of it, so that maybe it will last a little longer 😉

  • add in regular physical activity: such as yoga or walking
  • drink more water. I usually only drink water, but I am still not intaking a good amount
  • nutrition? idk about this one, your girl loves nachos too much, but maybe? lol

Personal

Reading:

I lost my spark for reading a long time ago. I know, I am an English major and aspiring writer. But when you read because you have to, you start to lose interest. I read some really great pieces last semester that sparked my love of reading again. I want to start carving time out for reading:

  • read ten minutes a day
  • make a reading wishlist

Writing:

Did you catch the aspiring writer part? Writing is good for me in so many ways. I use this blog and have been writing my memoir, but I need something more challenging. Enter,

  • poetry

Volunteer Work:

I have been so blessed by the kind hearts of others and want to work towards giving back more:

  • Make A Wish volunteer work

Spiritual Growth

This category has one overarching goal: to grow in my faith and closer to God.

  • try new churches in Conway
  • daily devotional
  • daily prayer time

I know, this is A LOT! But, I did not do this all in one sitting. I have been sorting through these thoughts for a while. Once I sat down and worked through it, I felt prepared to make my goals.

Which is what you are here for, right?

Without further ado:

I ended up with two goals per category. This was not planned, but I like the way it worked out.

2020 Goals:

  1. Prepare for grad school. (work + learning)
  2. Improve & further blog, kaden plans, and memoir. (work +learning)
  3. Develop solid, daily routines. (health + wellness)
  4. Advance health. (health +wellness)
  5. Devote time towards recreational reading + writing. (personal)
  6. Provide service. (personal)
  7. Increase biblical knowledge. (spiritual growth)
  8. Devote time towards my relationship with God. (spiritual growth)

I am NOT trying to accomplish all of these today, this week, this month, or even during this quarter of the year. And if all of these do not happen during 2020, that is OKAY! But, these are goals that are pointing me in the direction I need to go to better myself, which is the whole point of resolutions.

I have decided that each month, I will choose one time goal tasks, weekly habits, and daily habits to work on. These will each help me work towards achieving my overall goals.

I intended to share my January Goal Plans, but this post has already been much longer than anticipated, so stay tuned! I will have an outline of how I am working towards my yearly goals this month, on Friday!
